Get to Know Us!

After deciding to adopt their first rescue pig in 2018, Rigo and Rich quickly fell in love with Ms. Laverne and realized they needed to do more to help livestock and exotic pets who had not yet found their forever homes. Founded in 2024 after years of hard work and investment, Backbone Animal Sanctuary was established in Loveland, Colorado.

Situated on three and a half acres of heaven, we strive to give animals not just forever homes, but homes filled with enrichment and interaction. Many of the animals we have rescued come from harsh living conditions, kept in cages that were too small, left in basements, or given little to no interaction. Here, every animal receives proper nutrition, veterinary care, and ample time for out-of-enclosure play and enrichment.

Animals are sentient beings and should never be left to suffer in the conditions from which many of them came. At Backbone Animal Sanctuary, they are not. We are also proud to work alongside other rescues to ensure animals receive the best possible outcomes and the lives they truly deserve.
